The phrase “Home is where the heart is” couldn’t be more true for me. My home is my sanctuary, and I’ve worked very hard to create a space that simultaneously inspires and comforts me. The décor in my home is similar to my personal style: a carefully curated mix between contemporary and vintage, united with custom and unique pieces.
Many of the items in my home represent something special to me (a framed floral needlepoint from my grandmother; the stunning glassware that I stumbled upon at a thrift store and then trekked home on a 45-minute bus ride; or the set of bookends that I was given as a parting gift from one of my first writing assignments). For better or worse, I decorate down to the last detail (garbage cans, light switch covers, and drawer organizers, to name a few) because in my tiny space, it’s the small details that are hard to miss.
To tackle these details, I was given the opportunity to incorporate Kleenex’s Isaac Mizrahi décor-friendly tissue boxes into my humble abode. They are available in a range of prints and colours, but you certainly won’t find any cheesy floral patterns or dated graphic designs. I placed them among a few of my favourite things to see how well they blended in with my furniture, knickknacks, and prized possessions:
Home Office Hutch
I spend a lot of hours working at home, but don’t have the room for a traditional desk. With a little help from a friend and a lot of elbow grease, we turned a (very rough looking) hutch that was headed to the landfill into a convertible desk. The shelves and drawers are perfect for storage, allowing my press releases, reference materials, and style guides to literally be at my fingertips.
This table houses so many of my favourite things: scented candles, vintage coasters, fresh flowers, and my great-grandmother’s brass candlesticks.
Glass Jars and Vases
One of my favourite things to collect is vintage glassware, jars, and vases; I use them around my home to store my ridiculously large lipstick collection, pens and pencils, cotton balls, and cooking utensils.
Wood Palette Accessory Shelf
Some of my favourite things around my home were handmade by friends and family or given to me by someone special. My wood palette shelf happens to be both of these things; handmade by my better half – he repurposed an old bookshelf and an even older palette to create the accessory shelf of my dreams.
I acquired this piece after a friend discovered it at a local thrift store for just $65. I love waking up and seeing this dresser every day; it’s elegant but also very solid, and its vertical design saves me highly coveted floor space.
With a little bit of planning and a lot of patience, all of these items come together to create a space that I call (and very much feels like) home.
