For me, there’s nothing better than a day at the beach: sun-kissed skin, cold drinks, a cool breeze, lazy afternoons, fresh fruit, and a good book; it’s one of the few ways that I am able to really relax, unwind, and unplug.  There’s no shortage of stunning beaches in Vancouver, so last weekend I packed a beach bag, left my writing at home, and headed for some fun in the sun.

What’s for Lunch?

I always pack a lunch when I head to the beach, mostly because I don’t like how I feel after eating greasy French fries or a fatty hamburger in 27 degree weather.  My go-to beach lunch is usually gluten free sandwiches, fruit, nuts, and some sort of a refreshing drink.  Last weekend I was introduced to Starbucks Refreshers, so I took all three varieties (Raspberry Pomegranate, Strawberry Lemonade and Blueberry Açai) with me along with some fresh watermelon and corn chips.  The Refreshers contain real fruit juice, B vitamins, and naturally occurring caffeine from green coffee extract, making them a fruity replacement for your morning coffee, or an easy afternoon pick-me-up.

What’s in My Purse

Packing a beach bag is pretty simple: towels, sunscreen, a bathing suit, flip-flops, and other assorted beach items, but what do you with your purse? This is an issue that has frustrated me for years; the last thing I want to do is add another massive bag (i.e. my everyday purse) to the long list of items that I lug to the beach.  I refuse to leave my valuables unattended when I go for a swim or a walk, so last weekend I found a solution: the Lululemon Go Lightly Bag.  It’s the most sporty bag I’ve ever owned, so I was surprised how quickly I fell in love with it – no romancing required.  Small and extremely lightweight, it’s big enough to carry the essentials, and doesn’t weigh me down.  It’s water-resistant and convertible, so it can be worn as a cross-body or around the waist, making beach walks worry-free and hands-free (should you so desire).

What’s in my Beach Bag

I love a fun, relaxing beach read; right now I’m reading The One and Only by Emily Giffin, and I can’t seem to put it down.  I sometimes find myself reading dry, technical documents for some of my freelance projects, so this book is exactly what I look for when I feel like tucking into a good read.  Also in my beach bag is a pair of sunglasses from The Row that I splurged on a few years back, and they haven’t let me down.  Sturdy and stylish, the leather-wrapped arms add a unique touch to an everyday accessory.
