Cupcake Vineyards Red Velvet and Chardonnay Wine

A review and personal tasting notes of Cupcake Vineyards’ Red Velvet and Chardonnay White Wine.

As a self-proclaimed cookie monster and cupcake queen, it’s no surprise that when I spotted Cupcake wine on the shelf of my local wine store, I had to try it.  Due to some acidity issues that I have, I don’t drink wine very often – but when I do, I make sure that I really love and enjoy it. Smooth and priced at $15.99 a bottle, Cupcake Vineyards’ Red Velvet wine quickly became one of my go-to wines.

Fast-forward a year.  Imagine my surprise and excitement when I got an email from Cupcake Vineyards with an invitation to celebrate National Cupcake Week with some gluten-free cupcakes and two bottles of Cupcake wine.  I’m not one to turn down good wine or sugar, so I happily agreed to celebrate both Cupcake Week and the festive season with some treats.

I’ll be the first one to admit that my expertise is in fashion and beauty, not wine. In fact, I often find choosing a wine overwhelming, and I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a “subtle hint of oak” or smelled a “note of raspberry.” While I admire people that have developed their palette to detect many different layers of a wine, much of it is lost on me.

When it comes to wine, what I am an expert on is what I like: a smooth wine without a bitter aftertaste or a bite of acidity. For the sake of my craft, I tried both the Red Velvet and the Chardonnay by incorporating them into my holiday festivities; it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.

Cupcake Vineyards Red Velvet Wine

Cupcake Vineyards’ Red Velvet wine is creamy, smooth, and rich, and is made by combining Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.  This has been one of my favourite wines for a while now, so it’s certainly no stranger to my household; my better half and I enjoyed it during a quiet night in that was spent cooking and decking the halls.

I feel like I could pair this wine with anything (and I have). It went well with the spiced cod with broccoli-quinoa pilaf that we made for dinner, as well as the advent calendar chocolate that I ate while we cooked said dinner.

Cupcake Vineyards Chardonnay

I can probably count the number of times per year that I drink white wine on one hand.  Red wine is always my first choice because I find many white wines too sweet or not savory enough for my taste.  In the spirit of trying something new, I took Cupcake Vineyards’ Chardonnay over to a friend’s house for an evening of good food and good conversation. We caught up over a few glasses of Chardonnay, and I was pleasantly surprised.  It’s rich without being too bold, not overly sweet or dry, and very smooth.  Although my favourite is still the Red Velvet, this is definitely a white wine that I would be more than happy to enjoy again.

They say that life is too short to drink bad wine, and I have no intention of challenging that maxim.
